Getting there

At the castle is reached by an ancient mule track that starts from the village of Castel di Nocco. The road and the summit called Monte d’Oro are not reported.

Description

Situated on the top of the Golden Mount, the fortress has still visible on the perimeter wall consists of a wall-embankment and partially equipped to walk round.
The remains of the castle are now covered by vegetation, while the inner surface of the rock is occupied by olive trees, but are detectable access ramps and the base of two towers, one almost certainly used as a lookout tower.
The castle was probably destroyed in the twelfth century, during one of the many wars arose between Pisa and Lucca.
