The first stone of the Leaning Tower was laid during the celebration of the Assumption, August 9, 1173. If it is possible to trace the authors autographs of the other monuments of the square, the bell is not signed, which is quite curious that you add to the debate on the centuries-old and first author on the first decade of the factory’s bell tower.

In 1185 occurred the basement and the subsequent collapse which involved tilting the block of work for almost a century. The continuation was entrusted to Giovanni di Simone, who in those years he had worked on the Church of San Francesco with its bold bell. The architect showed extraordinary skill in limiting the consequences of the slope and so the work continued until 1284, when the naval defeat of Meloria. The last ring of the bell tower, the seventh, turned into a belfry, was designed and built by Thomas Pisano in the middle of the fourteenth century.
